“Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things - air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky - all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.” - Cesare Pavese

Bush Bars

My two biggest complaints about Abuja would be 1. It's WAY too expensive.  This is a capital city that was created in the middle of nowhere to avoid any tribal conflict and it now houses the infamous corrupt government of Nigeria.....and they have MONEY.  Seriously, these people are rich. 2. There's not enough culture here.  I come from two very 3rd world environments where the non-American culture was right in your face.  Here, there are actually some comforts and its civilized and I miss that crazy third world life.

Last weekend though, I had the opportunity to get outside the city.  Well, not quite outside the city, but on the outskirts.  And we went to a very Nigerian place...a bush bar.  It's basically a big circular gathering of grills, where women are cooking up TONS of fish.  In some places, you can actually point out the live fish that you want and they kill it in front of you.  We went to a pretty big place with a large group so we didn't have this luxury.  The women put this intense spicy coating on top of the fish that is almost unbearable to eat, but tastes VERY good.  You eat with your hands of course and pull the fleshy fish right off the bone.  The good news is there are french fries and beer to compliment your meal so your mouth doesn't totally catch on fire.  It's soooo yummy and sooo Nigerian.  I love it!!

On our way to the bush bar...

Yummmmmmmmmmmm.  These are kroker fish.

Poor little fishies.

All gone =)
